Greg Raymer, he who wears the holographic spectacles, is a teddy bear of a man, which means he does not look very intimidating. Despite his physical appearance, the curly haired, balding, overweight Raymer, who is known as Fossilman, is a top competitive poker player.

Like Chris Moneymaker, Raymer came to prominence after making his way to and winning the WSOP Main Event via a qualifying satellite tournament. He made that journey in 2004. The next year, he almost did it again, finishing 25th in the Main Event. Each time, he had to battle through over 5,000 opponents.

Raymer, who was given the nickname Fossilman due to the fact that he uses a small fossil as a card protector, is known as an all around good guy and a smart player. He’s a solid bluff artist and fine tournament competitor. He manages to time his bluffs well and will often win large stacks of chips in the process. When playing, Raymer is a total professional, offering a business-like demeanor that’s defined by unflinching focus and cutthroat play. However, away from the green felt, Fossilman is known to be affable, personable and an everyday sort of guy. His personal life seems to be in balance as is his play at the table. His best games are Limit and No-Limit Hold’em.

Raymer, who was a well-known player in Fox Woods years before he made it to the WSOP, is still building his legacy. One thing, he’s noted for is his integrity, being a man of his word. Another thing about this poker player is that winning big has not changed him. Rather than traveling extensively on the poker circuit, Raymer, who prior to turning pro was a patent lawyer, chooses to spend time with his wife Cheryl and daughter Sophie.
